Driver killed as Ukrainian drones strike transport at Russian-held Zaporizhzhia plant
A driver was killed when Ukrainian drones hit a staff bus at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, officials said.
The administration of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is under Russian control in southeastern Ukraine, announced that a driver lost his life after Ukrainian drones targeted a staff bus for the second day in a row. The plant, the continent’s biggest with six reactors, was captured by Russian forces during the early weeks of the 2022 invasion. Plant officials said the back-to-back attacks on transport vehicles appear deliberate and pose a direct threat to personnel who keep the facility running.
Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of striking sites linked to the plant, citing a July drone strike that killed the chief engineer and the driver of a service car. The nearby city of Enerhodar, home to many plant workers, has also been frequently hit. Rosatom noted that a truce, mediated by the International Atomic Energy Agency, now allows repairs at a thermal power station that supplies electricity to the nuclear complex.
Why it matters
The death highlights the growing risk to nuclear safety from the conflict around Europe's largest reactor.
