Driver linked to earlier crash had active warrant before fatal collision

Tyler Day, 32, was driving a work truck when he collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Stamp’s Lane and Terra Nova Road on July 21, causing extensive damage but no severe injuries. Police classified the incident as non-criminal and did not query his information, missing a warrant issued in January 2025 for breaching a court order in Corner Brook. On July 23, Day allegedly struck six-year-old Zafeer Munir at Thorburn Road and Larkhall Street, fled the scene, and was apprehended nearby after an eyewitness pursuit.

He has been charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death, and failing to remain at the scene. Former police officer and criminologist Michael Arntfield noted that even if the warrant had been enforced, Day probably would have been released on bail before the fatal incident. Day remains in custody awaiting a court hearing on September 8.
