Driver pleads guilty to killing a pedestrian at Melbourne comic convention

Awer Dau, 34, appeared by video link from prison at Melbourne Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to multiple offences stemming from a crash outside the Supanova Comic Con and Gaming Event at the Melbourne Showgrounds in Ascot Vale. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on April 18, when his Toyota sedan mounted the curb and hit a group of young men, killing a 20-year-old and seriously injuring another of the same age. A third young man escaped harm.

In addition to culpable driving causing death and serious injury, Dau was charged with possessing methamphetamine and failing to render assistance. He did not request bail and remains in custody awaiting a plea hearing at the Victorian County Court in February. The convention, which draws thousands of fans and featured headliners such as Jamie Campbell Bower and Andy Serkis, was crowded at the time of the crash.
