Driver receives probation after negligent homicide conviction in former Bees announcer's death

On Tuesday, 66-year-old Douglas Richard Milne received a sentence of two years’ probation, 120 days of strict home confinement and 200 hours of community service after being convicted of negligent homicide and a failure-to-yield infraction for hitting former Salt Lake Bees announcer Steve Klauke in a crosswalk on June 10, 2024. Video evidence showed Milne making a U-turn and proceeding north without slowing, striking Klauke who had a green walk signal.

The 3rd District Judge Chelsea Koch suspended the one-year jail term originally imposed, noting the case as “everyone’s worst nightmare” and emphasizing the community’s affection for both men. Klauke’s son Adam highlighted the outpouring of support at an open-house memorial, while his daughter Lisa expressed that the driver’s apology did not equate to accountability. The sentencing also included a prohibition on driving with a revoked license, a measure the court could not directly order but was enforced.
