Driver sentenced after crashing into cyclist while missing required glasses
A 48-year-old driver in Hull was convicted of dangerous driving after hitting a cyclist because he forgot to wear his prescribed glasses.
On July 22, a driver identified as Uchenna Agunenye, 48, swerved his silver Citroën C4 off the road on Holderness Road in Hull and struck a cyclist using the adjacent cycle lane. The impact threw the woman into metal railings, leaving her with a broken leg, heel, several toes, an elbow fracture and lacerations, necessitating hospital treatment and surgery. Officers conducting a roadside eyesight test found Agunenye failed, confirming that his licence required him to wear glasses while driving.
He was breathalysed and given a drug test, both negative, but was arrested for breaching his licence conditions. At Hull Crown Court on September 15, he received a 14-month suspended sentence, a two-year driving disqualification, a requirement to pass an extended eyesight test, 180 hours of unpaid work and a £187 payment to the victim. Roads Policing Unit officer Matt Tuton highlighted the danger of driving without proper vision and urged the public to report reckless behaviour.
