Drivers sound horns on Lisbon’s 25 de Abril Bridge demanding minister’s resignation and tax cuts
Motorists on the 25 de Abril Bridge honked in a Friday protest, calling for Environment Minister Maria Graça Carvalho's dismissal and a return to pandemic-era telework.
Early Friday, motorists assembled on Lisbon’s 25 de Abril Bridge and launched a coordinated horn-blowing protest to highlight soaring fuel prices. The action, organized by the Associação Utentes Ponte 25 de Abril and announced by its spokesperson Aristides Teixeira, started at 08:00 and targeted Environment Minister Maria Graça Carvalho, demanding her resignation. Protesters also called for the reinstatement of teleworking arrangements that were in place during the pandemic, as well as the suspension of bridge tolls and the removal of VAT and ISP levies on fuel.
Teixeira said the demonstration reflects frustration with the minister’s recent statements, which he described as provocative and disrespectful to commuters who rely on private vehicles. The protest aims to pressure the government into easing transport-related costs for motorists.
