Drone swarm spotted near Romania's border, three aircraft dispatched for monitoring
A group of drones was detected close to the Romanian-Ukrainian border near Insula Șerpilor on Thursday, prompting a public alert and the launch of three aircraft to observe the situation.
Radar monitoring by the Ministry of National Defense registered a cluster of airborne objects near the Romania-Ukraine frontier, specifically close to Insula Șerpilor, at approximately 15:00 on Thursday. The National Military Command Center alerted the Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations, which then broadcast a RO-Alert to the public in northern Tulcea County around 15:50. In response, two Spanish F-18 aircraft, operating under the reinforced aerial police mission from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, took off alongside a Romanian IAR 330 Puma SOCAT helicopter.
All three aircraft were tasked with surveillance and assessment of the unidentified drones. The coordinated effort underscores regional vigilance amid heightened aerial activity near the border.
