Drunk soldier loses loaded pistol during secret overseas deployment

In December 2024, Lance Corporal Aaron Mann, then 26, was deployed on a top-secret mission with the first Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment when he became severely intoxicated. He misplaced a bag that held a loaded 9mm pistol and 30 rounds of ammunition, which local civilians retrieved and handed back hours later. Mann admitted guilt to violating an alcohol prohibition and was sentenced to one year in a military detention facility, after which he will be discharged from service.

Assistant Judge Advocate General Peter Legard criticized the military’s pervasive drinking culture, saying it undermines morale and operational capability across the services. The court martial highlighted the potential for “massive operational consequences” from such lapses. The Army reiterated that alcohol misuse leading to conduct breaches will result in disciplinary action.
