DSA co-chair Gustavo Gordillo faces Brooklyn eviction lawsuit over unpaid rent

Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Gustavo Gordillo has been sued in Brooklyn housing court for skipping three months of rent on his Crown Heights apartment.

A Brooklyn housing court action brought by landlord Shimon Liashi accuses Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Gustavo Gordillo of neglecting three months of $2,500 rent on a Crown Heights one-bedroom apartment he began leasing in May 2025. The suit, seeking $5,000 for missed payments in December and January, remains unresolved because Gordillo has not filed the mandatory answer. The 38-year-old, son of telecommunications executive Gustavo E. Gordillo, lives in a $1.5 million townhouse gifted by his father that is undergoing a $1.4 million renovation.

Councilwoman Vickie Paladino criticized the episode as a sign of “bottomless entitlement” among wealthy DSA members. Observers also note the contrast between his public anti-landlord rhetoric and his personal default. The Crown Heights unit was re-let in May, and the eviction case continues.

Why it matters

The case highlights a clash between socialist advocacy and personal financial responsibility, raising questions about accountability for public figures.
