DSA-LA hosts Y2K-themed prom to fund local socialist campaigns
The Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America is holding a Y2K-style prom on Friday, using a pay-what-you-can model to raise money for its political activities.
The Democratic Socialists of America’s Los Angeles chapter is staging a Y2K-themed prom on Friday night at Friendship Auditorium in Los Feliz, offering 2000s R&B, pop-punk, a photo booth, DIY glitter tattoos and a prom royalty ceremony. Admission follows a pay-what-you-can structure, with a $15 baseline suggestion and higher tiers available, and every dollar is earmarked for the chapter’s political work, including anti-ICE efforts, tenant protections and backing socialist candidates.
Volunteers manage planning, decoration, bartending and supply costs, while DJs and “celebrity chaperones” are sourced from allied performers at little or no charge. The city-owned venue keeps rental expenses far below private club rates, allowing more of the collected money to flow into campaign funds. Those funds support candidates such as Marissa Roy for city attorney, Estuardo Mazariegos for City Council District 9, and Faizah Malik for District 11. Organizers market the night as a blend of nostalgic high-school fun and progressive activism.
