Dulles Airport Board Approves $19.9 Billion Renovation Including New Concourses and Automated Transit
The Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority board authorized a $19.9 billion funding package to start a multi-phase overhaul of Washington Dulles International Airport in 2027.
Washington Dulles International Airport’s governing board gave the green light to a $19.9 billion renovation plan that will begin in 2027, expanding on an earlier $4.4 billion allocation. The comprehensive package funds five major construction streams: a $6.2 billion overhaul of the main concourse, new concourses costing just under $10 billion, and a $3.75 billion upgrade that replaces existing people-mover shuttles with automated transit and adds an underground train system.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted a new parking structure with 32,000 spaces will also be built. Financing will be sourced from airline-backed bonds, with United Airlines, the Air Force and other carriers contributing, eliminating the need for federal money. The renovation, described by Donald Trump as correcting a mis-designed airport, is expected to take 15 years to complete. MWAA CEO Jack Potter announced the approval from the board.
