Dunedin and Waitaki Highlight New Zealand's Quirky Appeal in Lonely Planet 2027 List

Lonely Planet has announced its Best in Travel 2027 selections, featuring two spots from New Zealand. Dunedin earned a place thanks to its lively university culture, quirky attractions like the Museum of Natural Mystery, and distinctive culinary experiences. The Waitaki region was highlighted for its rare geological finds, family-friendly landscape, and a small but high-quality wine area that many visitors overlook.

Jessica Lockhart, Lonely Planet’s Oceania editor, explained that the judges sought less-traveled locales that showcase the country’s eccentric side. The list comprises 50 destinations worldwide, divided by region, and aims to guide travelers for the year ahead. Inclusion on the list is not guaranteed annually for any country.
