Dutch cabinet reallocates billions to defense budget through 2031
The Netherlands government is moving billions from the unallocated ‘Additional Post’ to the defense budget, raising total defense spending to €28.9 billion for 2027.
The Dutch cabinet is implementing a coalition-agreement pledge to boost defence financing by transferring billions from the ‘Additional Post’—the pool of unassigned budgetary money—into the defence budget through 2031. For the 2027 fiscal year, total defence spending is estimated at €28.9 billion, of which €3.1 billion is allocated to military support for Ukraine. Including that support, defence expenditure reaches about 2.36 % of the country’s GDP, comfortably above NATO’s 2 % target; without the Ukraine component it stands at roughly 2.12 %.
The budget also confirms continued Ukraine aid, with €2 billion planned for 2027 and €2.4 billion and €2.2 billion slated for 2028 and 2029 respectively, after an earlier cash-shift to maintain funding levels. An additional €250 million is being brought forward for immediate deployment this year.
