Dutch education minister orders new board for troubled Amsterdam school

Education Secretary Judith Tielen has issued a formal reprimand to the Cornelius Haga Lyceum, demanding two new board members with appropriate expertise.

The Cornelius Haga Lyceum in Amsterdam, flagged by the Onderwijsinspectie for prolonged mismanagement, received a formal ‘aanwijzing’ from Education Secretary Judith Tielen, who called the daily low-quality teaching "unacceptable." The directive requires the school to install two new board members possessing the necessary managerial and financial experience, and to obtain prior approval for their appointment. Additionally, the institution must draft a realistic, financially viable future scenario and provide the ministry with recovery reports every four weeks, with funding reductions possible if standards are not met.

The school’s lawyer, Wouter Pors, argues the measure infringes on the autonomy of special education and plans to challenge it in court. The ministry declined to comment further on the specifics of the sanctions.

Why it matters

The ruling could reshape oversight and funding for underperforming schools in the Netherlands.
