Dutch health agency reports West Nile virus death amid limited local cases
A patient died in a Dutch hospital after contracting West Nile virus, according to the RIVM, which said infections in the country remain rare.
On August 26, the Dutch public health agency RIVM announced that a person died in a hospital after being infected with West Nile virus within the Netherlands. The institute had previously reported three likely cases of locally acquired infection, marking the first such instances since 2020. No details were provided to confirm if the fatality was one of those three patients.
RIVM reiterated that the probability of contracting the virus in the country remains very low. The World Health Organization notes that the disease can become severe in roughly one in 150 infected individuals and that rising temperatures are allowing mosquito vectors to spread more widely across Europe, with increases observed in Greece and Italy. Despite these trends, Dutch officials maintain that widespread transmission is unlikely at present.
