Dutch intelligence warns far-right groups are normalising extremist ideas
The AIVD and NCTV say far-right extremists are softening their rhetoric to make extremist ideas more acceptable to the public.
A joint analysis by the Algemene Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst (AIVD) and the Nationaal Coördinator Terrorismebestrijding en Veiligheid (NCTV) warns that far-right extremists are deliberately softening their discourse to make their ideas appear more acceptable to a larger segment of society. According to the agencies, some actors attempt to sway political parties from the inside, repeatedly exposing citizens to extremist content in order to lower resistance and foster acceptance of such views.
The report highlights that the presence of extremist participants in public debate limits the room for constructive dialogue and solutions. It further describes the core extremist doctrine as based on racial inequality and the belief in white superiority. The agencies stress that this normalization poses a threat to democratic discourse and social cohesion in the Netherlands.
