Dutch minister redirects billions from new projects to critical infrastructure upkeep

Infrastructure Minister Vincent Karremans announced a reallocation of funds, moving money from new construction to essential maintenance across the Netherlands.

Minister Vincent Karremans told parliament that the ministry will redirect spending from fresh construction to vital maintenance to extend the lifespan of Dutch infrastructure. The move follows decades of underfunded upkeep, highlighted by the Algemene Rekenkamer as early as 1997, and a recent state of infrastructure report noting increased strain in 2025. Using a new evaluation framework, projects like the Randstadrail expansion and upgrades to the A27/A12 ring around Utrecht were dropped, releasing hundreds of millions for maintenance tasks such as the A20 widening and work on the Lemmer-Delfzijl waterway.

Meanwhile, the Brainportregio will receive a targeted boost, with Eindhoven and Noord-Brabant each contributing to improvements around the new ASML site. Authorities stress that while the reallocation eases immediate gaps, further investment will be needed to keep the network safe and functional.
