Dutch offshore platform generates first green hydrogen using wind power
A Dutch pilot called PosHYdon produced its inaugural batch of green hydrogen on the Q13a-A gas platform, powered by offshore wind.
In late July, the PosHYdon pilot in the Netherlands generated its first green hydrogen on the active Q13a-A offshore gas platform, marking the first fully electrified production site in the Dutch North Sea. The system uses desalinated seawater and offshore wind electricity to run electrolysers, while the platform simultaneously extracts natural gas. The initiative is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and involves a consortium that includes Eni Energy Netherlands, DEME Group, Eneco, Emerson, Gasunie, and several other firms.
Executives such as Lex de Groot of Eni and Nathan Pettus of Emerson hailed the milestone as a watershed for the energy transition. The pilot will now focus on gathering data on costs, maintenance and performance, with results to be shared with the hydrogen sector and minister Stientje van Veldhoven-van der Meer. The outcome aims to inform future scaling of offshore green hydrogen production in Europe.
Why it matters
It proves that offshore wind can power hydrogen production alongside gas extraction, a key step for a low-carbon energy system.
