Dutch Prime Minister vows to shield ICC from US sanctions at UN
Prime Minister Rob Jetten told the UN that the Netherlands will keep defending the International Criminal Court against looming U.S. sanctions.
At a press briefing during the UN General Assembly, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten emphasized that protecting the International Criminal Court is a top priority for the Netherlands, even as the United States readies broad sanctions against the tribunal. Washington plans to prohibit American firms from supplying funds, technology or payroll services to the ICC, a move prompted by the court's 2024 arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant, as well as its investigation of U.S. military conduct in Afghanistan.
Jetten noted that Dutch diplomacy has already deployed "all diplomatic means" to avert the sanctions and pledged to sustain the effort in the coming months. He also referenced the recent removal of ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan by member states, underscoring that the court's legal actions remain unchanged despite internal turmoil. The Dutch leader framed the fight as essential to preserving the international rule of law for all nations.
