Dutch rail operator NS acknowledges union worries over rising staff violence
The national railway company confirmed that every incident of aggression is one too many and stressed the need for safe working conditions. The VVMC union warned that not only are attacks becoming more frequent, but they are also growing more severe. NS pointed to recent steps such as equipping all senior conductors with body-cameras and testing a baton for safety staff, while also recruiting additional security personnel.
NS publicly aligned itself with the anxieties expressed by its staff, the VVMC union and political figures regarding the safety of rail employees. The union’s letter warned of a surge in violent episodes on the tracks, noting both higher numbers and greater seriousness. In response, NS highlighted a series of measures it has introduced, including the rollout of body-cameras for every head conductor this year and a pilot program providing a weapon-stave to its Safety and Service teams.
The company also emphasized ongoing recruitment efforts to expand its security workforce. These actions aim to ensure that railway personnel can perform their duties without fear of assault.
