Dutch youth show sharply reduced acceptance of homosexuality, study finds
A new four-year study by the University Utrecht and the Trimbos Institute reveals a marked decline in Dutch adolescents' acceptance of homosexuality.
A longitudinal survey conducted by the University Utrecht and the Trimbos Institute shows that Dutch teenagers have become considerably less accepting of homosexuality over the past four years. Both boys and girls report lower willingness to support gay peers, and confidence that LGBT classmates can discuss their sexuality openly has fallen. Researchers attribute part of the change to heightened political and media scrutiny of sexual-diversity initiatives, such as the Lentekriebels program, which faced misinformation linking it to pedophilia.
The report also notes that extensive TikTok use and heightened academic pressure contribute to deteriorating mental health, especially among girls. Advocacy groups warn that the trend threatens the inclusivity of schools and broader societal acceptance of LGBT individuals.
Why it matters
Growing intolerance among youths could undermine LGBT rights and increase mental-health risks in Dutch schools.
