Duterte appears at ICC, prompting victims' groups to urge swift trial
Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte attended a hearing at the International Criminal Court, a move hailed by victims' advocates as a step toward accountability.
At the International Criminal Court in The Hague, former President Rodrigo Duterte made his second in-person appearance, attending the fourth status conference on the case against him. Patricia Enriquez of Duterte Panagutin Network Europe interpreted the attendance as an indication that Duterte is prepared to stand trial, aligning with the network's call for justice. She commended the prosecution and victims' representatives for their procedural readiness and cooperative approach to evidence.
The network and its Dutch counterpart are planning a week-long campaign starting November 27 to welcome Filipino supporters and raise awareness of the trial. Filipino victims' families are also gathering to strengthen mutual support. The group warned that repeated procedural challenges by Duterte's defense should not force victims to wait indefinitely for a verdict.
Why it matters
The hearing advances the ICC case against a former head of state, affecting accountability for alleged crimes and victims' hopes for justice.
