DWP Opens Winter Fuel Payment Applications, Deadline Set for March 31, 2027

The Department for Work and Pensions has started accepting claims for the 2026/27 Winter Fuel Payment, with a deadline of March 31, 2027 for postal and telephone applications.

The Department for Work and Pensions has launched the application period for the 2026/27 Winter Fuel Payment, which will remain open for postal and telephone submissions until March 31, 2027. While the majority of qualifying pensioners are expected to be paid automatically, the DWP advises individuals who do not receive State Pension, Pension Credit, Universal Credit, PIP, DLA, Carer’s Allowance, Attendance Allowance, income-related ESA, War Pensions Scheme awards, Industrial Injuries benefits, Incapacity Benefit or Industrial Death Benefit to check their eligibility and submit a claim.

Eligible recipients must have been born on or before 27 June 1960 and ordinarily reside in England, Wales or Northern Ireland; Scottish residents are covered by the separate Pension Age Winter Heating Payment. Payments vary between £100 and £300 depending on age and circumstances during the qualifying week of 21-27 September. Applicants must provide their National Insurance number, date of birth, address, bank details and at least one phone number on the form.

Why it matters

Ensuring eligible seniors claim the Winter Fuel Payment prevents them from missing vital financial support for heating costs.
