DWP outlines situations where Universal Credit recipients may have to repay benefits

The Department for Work and Pensions has issued guidance on when Universal Credit payments may need to be returned. The benefit supports individuals under State Pension age who have low earnings, replacing Housing Benefit and income-related ESA. To remain eligible, claimants must reside in the UK, keep savings below £16,000 and promptly inform the DWP of any changes, including health status, caring responsibilities, household composition, address or periods abroad.

Repayments can be required if the department makes a mistake or if claimants provide false or incomplete information. Updates can be submitted through the online account or by calling the dedicated helpline.
