DWP releases full eligibility list for this winter's £100-£300 fuel payment

The Department for Work and Pensions has published the complete criteria for the Winter Fuel Payment, confirming who will receive between £100 and £300 this season.

The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed the complete set of criteria determining who qualifies for the Winter Fuel Payment for the 2026/27 season. Eligible pensioners will receive a tax-free payment of £100 to £300, intended to offset higher heating expenses, with notification letters sent in October or November. Payment amounts depend on birth dates and whether the claimant lives alone or with another eligible person, with higher sums for those born before September 28 1946.

Individuals whose income exceeds £35,000 will be asked to return the payment via HMRC, either by tax code adjustment or a Self Assessment filing. The benefit does not apply to residents of Scotland, those who were in hospital for the full week of 21-27 September 2026, persons with restricted leave to remain, or anyone imprisoned during that week. Recipients in care homes receive reduced amounts. The DWP is currently reminding pensioners to opt out where necessary following a recent HMRC request for repayments.
