DWP rolls out digital reforms to streamline Personal Independence Payment for millions

The Department for Work and Pensions provided an update on reforms to the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) system under the Health Transformation Programme. Sir Stephen Timms explained that more than 90% of new PIP applicants can already submit health details online after initiating their claim by phone, cutting postage delays and enhancing accessibility. The programme aims to extend full digital functionality, allowing claimants to monitor application status and report changes of circumstance online by its conclusion, thereby reducing reliance on call centres.

These measures are introduced as the number of eligible PIP claimants in England and Wales has reached a record of just over four million, up 7% according to recent figures. The government says the overhaul will modernise health and disability benefits, create a simpler application process, improve evidence gathering and deliver a more tailored service while building public trust and efficiency for taxpayers. Citizens Advice notes that most claimants will still need to undergo an assessment, which is not a medical exam but a description of daily impact.
