Eagles sideline quarterback Jalen Hurts with calf blood clot for Panthers game

Philadelphia announced that quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss the upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers after doctors detected a superficial blood clot in his calf.

The Philadelphia Eagles revealed that quarterback Jalen Hurts will be unavailable for Sunday’s matchup with the Carolina Panthers because a superficial blood clot was found in his calf. The clot was discovered after an ultrasound taken on the team’s flight to London, following a cleat strike during the Week 4 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams. Hurts returned to full practice and was initially cleared for the Week 5 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, with a follow-up scan scheduled within 72 hours.

After playing on Sunday and receiving additional treatment, a Wednesday night ultrasound showed the clot had shifted, leading doctors to rule him out for the Panthers game. The organization said it is determining the next steps for his care, emphasizing that his health remains the top priority. In his absence, backup quarterback Tanner McKee will take the field.

Why it matters

Hurts' absence could affect the Eagles' performance and playoff hopes, while highlighting the seriousness of blood-clot injuries in sports.
