Early childhood sugar limits linked to lower dementia risk later in life

A study published in Neurology finds that children who consumed less added sugar during their first 1,000 days had a reduced chance of developing dementia or Alzheimer’s decades later.

An analysis of UK Biobank data, covering almost 65,000 individuals born between 1942 and 1954, suggests that low sugar exposure in the first 1,000 days of life may protect against later cognitive decline. During World War II Britain imposed a daily sugar allotment of 41 grams, roughly the amount in a 12-ounce soda, and participants who experienced this rationing had a 23% lower likelihood of dementia and a 28% lower likelihood of Alzheimer’s disease.

The protective effect persisted even when researchers adjusted for lifestyle, socioeconomic status and other health conditions. For those who eventually developed dementia or Alzheimer’s, the disease manifested on average three years later than in the non-rationed group. While the study cannot pinpoint a safe sugar threshold, the authors advise parents to reduce added sugars, echoing Dietary Guidelines that discourage added sugars for children under 11. The findings add to growing evidence that early nutrition influences long-term brain health.
