Early flu season spikes nationwide as FDA approves first mRNA flu vaccine for adults 50+

An unusually early rise in influenza cases is being observed, with infection rates in parts of the West already matching levels typically seen later in the season and spreading nationwide. Because many people have not yet received the annual flu shot, experts recommend getting vaccinated immediately rather than waiting. Traditional public‑health habits such as frequent hand washing, mask use when symptomatic, adequate sleep, hydration and nutrition are also advised.

The FDA approved mFLUSIVA in August, the first mRNA‑based flu vaccine targeting adults 50 and older, and early studies report a 27% lower infection rate in that age group compared with the traditional vaccine. The CDC notes that flu seasons vary and that current trends still fall within expected seasonal variation.
