A cohort of nearly 65,000 individuals born around the time the United Kingdom ended sugar rationing in 1953 was examined, showing that early-life exposure to lower sugar levels corresponded with reduced incidence of several cancers and telomere lengths equivalent to about two fewer years of biological aging. The researchers caution that the design was observational and cannot prove causation or the reversibility of effects.
In the United States, the Florida Department of Health announced a draft rule that would drop four vaccines—hepatitis B, varicella, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and pneumococcal—from school mandates, while retaining requirements for measles, mumps, rubella, polio, diphtheria and tetanus, and expanding the religious exemption language. The proposal is open for public comment until mid-September. A new analysis of FDA drug approvals found that the average number of supporting studies declined sharply, with about 70% of 2024 approvals based on a single trial and industry funding rising to roughly 80% of those studies, highlighting a shift in the evidentiary landscape for new medicines.
