Early voting surges with over two million Swedes casting ballots ahead of September election
Swedish authorities report that more than two million voters have used early voting, a rise of about 32% compared with the same period in 2022.
Sweden's election authority announced that early voting began on August 26 and, as of September 8, more than two million voters—specifically 2,091,269—had cast their ballots, representing a 32% rise over the comparable window in the 2022 election. Anna Nyqvist, the agency's chief of staff, described the growth as significant and said the trend will be monitored as the election approaches on September 13. The surge reflects voters' preference for the ability to vote at any early-voting location at a convenient time.
Reports indicate heightened participation in immigrant-dense districts, where groups such as the Islamic Association in Malmö are mobilising residents through door-to-door outreach and mosque announcements. The authority warned that waiting too long could lead to longer queues on election day and urged early voters to act promptly. While a technical glitch may have affected up to 500 ballots, officials are still identifying the exact impact.
