ECB awards record 39 central contracts ahead of Ashes and 2027 World Cup

The England and Wales Cricket Board has signed a record 39 players to central contracts, with 30 full deals and nine development agreements, as it prepares for the upcoming Ashes series and the 2027 50-over World Cup.

The England and Wales Cricket Board announced its largest ever batch of central contracts, covering 39 players as it looks toward a home Ashes series next summer and the 2027 50-over World Cup in southern Africa. Retirements of former captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Mark Wood, together with the release of Zak Crawley, freed up funds that were allocated to 30 full England contracts and nine developmental deals. Ten cricketers, including uncapped seamer Henry Crocombe, secured two-year contracts lasting until September 2028, while Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith and Ollie Robinson received one-year terms after under-whelming showings against Australia.

Managing director Rob Key said contract length reflects both player security and the board’s ability to manage development. Brydon Carse’s future remains uncertain as a Cricket Regulator inquiry proceeds after a nightclub incident, though his existing contract still runs for another year. Several fringe players, such as Ollie Pope and Shoaib Bashir, remain on the payroll, while others like Luke Wood were released.

Why it matters

The contracts shape England's squad stability and selection ahead of major international tournaments.
