Economist Jeffrey Sachs predicts India will eclipse US as top global economy

Jeffrey Sachs, a Columbia University professor, said that within the next quarter-century India and China are set to become the world’s two biggest economies, relegating the United States to the third spot. He linked India’s rising population and China’s deceleration to this shift and stressed that a closer bilateral relationship would boost trade, investment and technology ties. Sachs described the emerging multipolar reality, naming the United States, China, India and Russia as the four major powers.

He criticized recent unilateral U.S. policies and praised BRICS as a counterbalance that represents about 40% of global output. The economist also noted that the global economic centre has historically been Asia and is now returning there.
