Ecuador detains former presidential hopeful Luisa Gonzalez amid financing probe

Former presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez was taken into custody in Quito as authorities investigate alleged irregularities in her campaign finances.

Luisa Gonzalez, who ran for president and lost to Daniel Noboa, was arrested by Ecuadorian officials on suspicion of improper political financing and campaign spending. Gabriela Rivadeneira, leader of the Citizens Revolution party, announced the detention. Gonzalez has previously asserted that her party filed its 2023 campaign expenses with the electoral authority and that prosecutors lack supporting evidence. The case revives scrutiny of the Correa-aligned political network.
