Edmonton police to brief public on Sikh temple stabbing investigation
Edmonton authorities will hold a press conference Thursday to update on the stabbing of two worshippers at the Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple by a 27-year-old suspect.
A 27-year-old man, out of prison a day earlier, broke into the Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple in northeast Edmonton on Aug. 21 carrying a screwdriver and stabbed two male congregants, ages 75 and 51. Temple staff report that both injured individuals are expected to survive. The suspect had earlier convictions for aggravated assault and assault on a peace officer and failed to report to a mandated halfway house.
Edmonton police will brief the media on Thursday, focusing on the motive, including the possibility of a hate-crime angle. The incident has drawn condemnation from Mayor Andrew Knack, Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney.
