Édouard Philippe says he would not live at the Élysée if elected in 2027

Presidential hopeful Édouard Philippe announced he would keep his home in Le Havre and not reside at the Élysée Palace if he wins the 2027 election.

During an appearance on the televised show L’Heure de Vérité, Édouard Philippe, the Horizons candidate for the 2027 French presidential race, declared he would not live at the Élysée Palace if elected. He likened the arrangement to his former practice as prime minister, when he returned to his house on rue de Varenne and later to his hometown of Le Havre, where he serves as mayor. Philippe stressed that staying at his private home provides the “forces of reminder” he needs and shields his children from the spotlight.

He did not criticize past presidents who chose to reside at the Élysée, such as François Hollande or Jacques Chirac. The stance, he noted, aligns with the majority of other candidates in the upcoming contest.

Why it matters

The pledge signals a different personal approach to the presidency, potentially influencing public expectations of work-life balance for France’s next leader.
