Eduardo Bolsonaro seeks renewed U.S. sanctions on Supreme Court justice during Washington trip

During an upcoming visit to Washington, Eduardo Bolsonaro intends to press U.S. authorities to restore sanctions on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes via the Global Magnitsky Act. He said the campaign has been active for over a year and is not tied to the tight presidential contest in Brazil, in which his brother Flavio Bolsonaro is statistically neck-and-neck with incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Eduardo, a former congressman now residing in the United States, has previously accused Moraes of abusing his judicial role in the case that led to his father’s conviction for an alleged coup attempt.

He points to a recent investigation suggesting Moraes may have improperly communicated with a banker linked to a large fraud scheme as grounds for renewed sanctions. The U.S. previously sanctioned Moraes and his wife in 2022, but the measures were lifted after diplomatic pressure from Brazil. Moraes has not responded to requests for comment.
