Education Minister halts all free-speaker school programs amid safety allegations

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek ordered an immediate suspension of any school programmes featuring independent speakers after serious safety concerns were raised on social media.

The Malaysian Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek, announced that all programmes involving independent speakers in schools are to be halted immediately due to serious safety and protection concerns for students. She emphasized that the ministry is seeking additional information about the claims circulating on social media. The suspension is intended to allow a comprehensive investigation to take place without further risk to pupils.

Sidek also called on the public to report any knowledge to the police to guarantee appropriate protection for children. The controversy stems from accusations that a well-known motivator, who frequently conducts talks in schools, has allegedly victimised students, including those at MRSM and SBP institutions. A social-media post further alleged that the Kedah State Education Department had already cancelled the speaker’s authorization to enter schools in the state.

Why it matters

The move affects how external speakers can engage with students and underscores the priority of student safety in education.
