Education Minister says UTS failed Jewish students after protest review
Education Minister Jason Clare criticised the University of Technology Sydney for mishandling complaints from Jewish students following a pro-Palestine rally, according to an ombudsman report.
A report by one outlet Student Ombudsman concluded that the University of Technology Sydney failed to apply its complaints policy after a pro-Palestine demonstration in March 2025, during which a guest speaker suggested Jews should feel uneasy. Several Jewish students either received no response or only generic replies to their grievances. The university’s subsequent external review was expanded to include an April 2025 AUJS-organized discussion, but it incorrectly accused the Australasian Union of Jewish Students of breaching university procedures, a claim the ombudsman said was biased and factually wrong.
The vice-chancellor published an action plan that incorporated the flawed recommendation, further harming AUJS’s reputation. Education Minister Jason Clare said the findings show UTS let Jewish students down and stressed the need for universities to treat all racism complaints seriously. The National Student Ombudsman, created in February 2025, issued the findings.
Why it matters
It highlights how university complaint handling can affect minority students and raise concerns about institutional bias.
