EE rolls out paid 5G Fast Lane service using network slicing
EE has introduced a premium 5G Fast Lane feature that moves subscribers onto a dedicated slice during congestion, available for an extra £5 per month.
EE has launched Fast Lane, a paid add-on that leverages 5G Standalone network slicing to give subscribers a dedicated connection during periods of congestion. When the main network detects heavy load, eligible devices are automatically shifted onto a separate slice, helping them continue streaming or processing transactions without slowdown. The feature is bundled with the Full Works Plus plan, priced £5 higher than the regular Full Works offering, and is also available to eligible small-business accounts.
Claire Gillies, CEO of BT's Consumer Division, explained that the service aims to keep users online during peak events such as sold-out concerts or festivals. While Vodafone previously introduced a similar slicing product for enterprise clients, EE's version targets consumer and small-business markets. Analysts note that the rollout tests whether customers will pay for more reliable service rather than just lower prices or larger data caps. The service requires a compatible 5G+ plan, device and SIM, plus coverage in a supported UK area.
Why it matters
It shows how mobile operators are monetising 5G capabilities by offering priority access for a fee.
