EEOC moves to end six-decade EEO-1 data collection amid Trump administration overhaul

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission plans to stop gathering EEO-1 demographic reports, a practice used for six decades to enforce anti-discrimination laws.

The EEOC has announced a proposal to discontinue the EEO-1 reporting requirement, which obliges companies to provide demographic breakdowns of their workforce. Since its inception under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the data has been central to investigations that recovered billions for workers facing discrimination. Since President Trump returned to office in January 2025, the commission has revised its strategic goals, prioritizing claims from white men and scaling back support for transgender employees.

EEOC Commissioner Andrea Lucas argued the collection is unconstitutional and burdensome, while civil-rights groups contend the move will hinder the agency’s ability to detect widespread bias. The proposal is expected to be approved by the majority-Republican commission soon.

Why it matters

Eliminating EEO-1 data could weaken the EEOC’s capacity to uncover and address workplace discrimination.
