EEOC sues Blue Bell over dismissal of Jewish worker who refused to shave beard

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed a lawsuit against Blue Bell Creameries, alleging the company fired a Jewish technician in Alabama after he requested a religious accommodation to keep his beard.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has taken legal action against Blue Bell Creameries, asserting that a Jewish body-shop technician at its Sylacauga, Alabama plant was dismissed after refusing to shave his beard for religious reasons. The complaint states the employee was fired in March 2025, less than a month after his refusal, and that the company’s stated reason - a time-keeping violation - was a cover for discrimination.

It further alleges that a supervisor repeatedly doubted the worker’s religious sincerity and that a safety coordinator dismissed the issue by invoking OSHA. The plant manager later ordered a special mask to accommodate the beard, but the employee was still terminated for alleged theft of company time. The EEOC filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama after unsuccessful conciliation attempts, seeking reinstatement, back wages and an order prohibiting future religious retaliation.
