Egypt denounces Israeli incursion at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque during Sukkot

Egypt's foreign ministry condemned a Thursday raid by Israeli forces on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which coincided with the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.

On Thursday, Israeli personnel entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem as hundreds of worshippers gathered for the sixth day of Sukkot. Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement decrying the action, saying it heightens tensions and endangers stability in the occupied Palestinian territories and the broader region. The site, traditionally reserved for Muslim prayer under historic status-quo arrangements, has been a recurrent flashpoint, with Israeli officials such as National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir previously involved in similar incidents.

Why it matters

The raid risks inflaming Israeli-Palestinian tensions and destabilizing a volatile region.
