Egypt launches first high-speed electric rail network spanning multiple regions
Egypt is building its inaugural high-speed electric railway system, with three lines already under construction linking major cities and ports.
Egypt has embarked on its first high-speed electric rail network, comprising four planned lines that will cover about 2,000 kilometres once completed. Siemens Mobility, in partnership with local firms Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors, is constructing the initial three lines. The flagship route links the Red Sea port of Ain Sokhna with Cairo, Alexandria, El Alamein and Marsa Matrouh, earning the nickname “Suez Canal on rails.”
A second line will run from the October City area west of Cairo down to Aswan and Abu Simbel, supporting agricultural and new-development zones. The third line connects Qena to the Red Sea coast, boosting tourism and freight to Safaga. Siemens will provide 41 Velaro high-speed trainsets, 94 Desiro regional units and 41 Vectron freight locomotives, all adapted for desert conditions. Test runs are slated to begin in October on the Ain Sokhna-October City segment, with construction of the first line already 85-88% complete.
Why it matters
The network will cut travel times, lower road emissions and enhance freight links across Egypt.
