Eid-e-Milad Does Not Halt Indian Stock Trading, Settlement Delayed

The National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange will trade on August 26 despite the Eid-e-Milad holiday, but settlement of trades will be postponed.

Eid-e-Milad falls on Wednesday, August 26, prompting questions about a possible trading break on Indian exchanges. While the holiday shuts many government offices, banks and some state institutions, the equity markets are unaffected; both the National Stock Exchange and the Bombay Stock Exchange will run their usual trading hours. However, the day is designated as a settlement holiday, meaning that while orders can be placed and executed, the actual clearing and settlement of funds and securities will be deferred to the next business day.

Participants should plan for this one-day lag when expecting share deliveries or cash proceeds. The currency market will remain closed, but commodity exchanges like MCX and NCDEX will stay open. The following complete market holiday is slated for September 14, marking Ganesh Chaturthi.

Why it matters

Investors need to know trading will continue on Eid-e-Milad but settlements will be delayed, affecting cash flow and share transfers.
