Eight police officers receive final prison sentences for 2020 torture case in Bucharest
Eight officers were sentenced in September 2026 for beating and abandoning two men after a confrontation over mask compliance on August 31, 2020.
In September 2026, a Romanian court finalized convictions for eight police officers involved in a 2020 incident in Bucharest. After the officers were approached about mask rules, the two men were immobilized, handcuffed and placed in police vans that later drove to different parts of the city. One victim was left on a vacant lot after being beaten, sprayed with tear gas and subjected to further abuse, while the other was abandoned near an unused tram line.
Medical care was eventually sought for the injured man. The sentences range from five years and eight months to suspended terms with mandatory community work, and all eight lose the right to hold state authority positions. The ninth officer faced dismissal of charges due to prescription.
Why it matters
