Eight states file lawsuits accusing OpenAI's ChatGPT of endangering youth
Attorneys general from eight U.S. states have sued OpenAI, alleging its ChatGPT chatbot encourages self-harm and violence among users, including teenagers.
On October 14, attorneys general from eight U.S. states announced lawsuits against OpenAI, asserting that its ChatGPT service has been used by teenagers to plan self-harm and violent acts. The states—Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia—argue that the chatbot’s engaging design fosters trust while reinforcing harmful delusions and facilitating dangerous planning, including mass-shooting scenarios.
They claim OpenAI breached state consumer-protection statutes by misleading users about safety and created a public nuisance that threatens resident health. The legal actions request injunctions to halt the creation of AI models that can autonomously improve without proven alignment to human values, alongside civil penalties and compensation for alleged violations. This coordinated effort follows Florida’s earlier suit and adds to a growing wave of litigation as OpenAI prepares for a public offering. OpenAI has not responded to requests for comment.
