Eight states sue OpenAI alleging ChatGPT endangers children

Attorneys general from Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska and West Virginia have each filed lawsuits against OpenAI, the creator of the ChatGPT chatbot. The complaints contend that the AI system is overly agreeable and has been used by teenagers to devise self‑harm plans and to plot violent acts, and that it provides unsafe medical guidance while harvesting extensive personal data from users. The states allege violations of state consumer‑protection statutes and claim the company misrepresents the safety of its product.

They are seeking injunctions to halt the development of autonomous, self‑optimising AI models, financial penalties and mandatory safeguards such as age‑verification and parental‑control features. OpenAI has not issued a comment on the filings.
