El Niño-driven heat spikes prompt NZ officials to urge grab-bags and fire escape plans
Fire and Emergency NZ warns that the upcoming El Niño-related heat wave will raise wildfire danger and advises households to prepare grab-bags and evacuation strategies.
Fire and Emergency NZ cautions that El Niño will bring unusually high temperatures this summer, creating conditions ripe for wildfires throughout the country. Tom Ronaldson, the agency’s national manager for community readiness and recovery, recommends that everyone compile a grab-bag containing sturdy shoes, warm clothing, food, water, a radio, a torch and gloves, as well as items for children and pets. He highlights that the eastern regions of both islands, central North Island and the far north are especially vulnerable, though risk exists elsewhere.
Since roughly 98 percent of fires stem from human actions, the agency urges residents to limit ignition sources, avoid parking on dry grass and verify burn-off safety via the “checkitsalright” website. For isolated communities with a single access road, having a clear evacuation plan is critical given how quickly fires can spread. Overall, the message is for communities to coordinate, discuss and finalize preparedness measures before the fire season peaks.
Why it matters
