El Niño drives expanded drought risk across the Philippines through March 2027
The Philippine weather agency warns that more regions will face drought from October 2026 until March 2027 as the El Niño persists.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued a climate outlook indicating reduced rainfall nationwide during the coming months. Weather specialist Junie Ruiz said the El Niño will keep the country drier, extending drought conditions to additional areas. The agency also noted the recent end of the southwest monsoon season, with weaker winds and declining precipitation.
Why it matters
Extended drought threatens water resources and agriculture for millions of Filipinos.
